503 cluster waves

Audiovisual installation with musical material sequenced by cosmological data.

Premiered during the Transpositions DA TA conference 2017 october 4-6 in MDT, Stockholm.

Data is collected from the largest objects in the universe – galaxy clusters. The data is collected with x-ray sensors on satellites orbiting earth. The data itself is used as musical material to drive sound and light synthesis. The ”geometrical” data such as distance and location of the galaxy clusters are used to setup the installations main instruments. The x-ray images are used as a type of score for playing the installation.

The installation is using a sound technique inspired by wave field synthesis, with a row of many loudspeakers. And a precisely synced lighting system to both heighten the aural experience and also make the visual element become musical and almost aural enitity.

On a technical note: a row of 24 loudspeakers and projection. Sound and visuals generates in real time.

  • The installation has also been shown during Nordic Music Days in Torshavn, Faroe Islands in 2021.
